A Letter from the President

I hope this email finds you well!

Halloween is upon us!  We hope you take a break from today's spooky fun and enjoy the latest Butterfly Newsletter!

The most exciting news: the FDA Approved Genentech's Gazyva for the treatment of Lupus Nephritis.  LSI's Board Chair, Dr. Robert Katz, wrote an intro in our article about the drug.  read the entire article.  More information is forthcoming and we'll be posting more lupus news througout the month, so be sure to come back often.

Great news from this year's Lupus Charity Runner team in the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.  This year, 43 runner raised awareness and over $100,000 for LSI's mission.  This is a huge benchmark to reach and we are honored that together we were able to achieve this goal.  Thanks to the runners and donors.

If you have ever thought about running the Chicago Marathon, take a look into the Lupus Charity Runners program.  As a team member, you will receive training, Lupus Charity Runner swag and two tickets to the LSI pasta dinner.  We'll be with you every step of the way.  For more information, contact mary@lupusil.org or lisa@lupusil.org.

Last weekend, LSI was able to join the American College of Rheumatology meeting.  This was an exciting event for us given the new FDA approved lupus drug.  There are other exciting new treatments in the pipeline which is great news for the entire lupus community.

There is a lot going on at the LSI.  If you aren't signed up for our Social Media accounts, now's the time.  We're increasing and diversifying our content.  Check it out and be sure to LIKE and SHARE the content to increase lupus awareness.

Research News

FDA Approves Genentech’s Gazyva for the Treatment of Lupus Nephritis

Dr. Robert Katz: Gazyva is the brand name for obinutuzumab which has just been FDA approved for active kidney lupus. It can be given two times a year after the first four doses which are given in the first year. It’s an anti-CD20 antibody given by intravenous infusion.

2025 Lupus Charity Runner Team
Raises Bar on Excellence

LSI has had teams in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon since 2007 and every team has been exceptionally dedicated to raising awareness and funds for lupus and LSI's mission.

This year, for the first time the Lupus Charity Runner Team raised over $100,000 with 43 runners.  What an amazing accomplishment!

It is always a pleasure to get to know our runners and to help him or her achieve their goal of running a marathon, or achieve their goal of running all Marathon Majors or achieve their goal of running another marathon.

The teams activities includes a dinner for runners and a guest.  This event is always fun and heartwarming.  This year was no different.

We are so honored that 43 runners chose to join Lupus Charity Runners.  Thanks to each and everyone for making a difference in the lupus community!

GSU Jaguar 5K

LSI Join GSU for its annual Jaguar 5K

Thanks to everyone who came out to Governors State University on Sunday, October 26th for the Jaguar 5k!

This was the second year LSI partnered with the school on its fundraising and community building event.

LSI passed out information about lupus, hosted our Lupus Walk Kids Tent and oversaw the Kids Dash.

LSI hosted a raffle and GSU celebrated participants with awards.

Thanks to GSU and Veronica for making the event possible and thanks to the Southern Suburbs Planning committee for making the event successful and full of heart.

The event was fun and educational.

REPRESENTING LSI

American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting

The American College of Rheumatology had its annual meeting in Chicago this year and LSI was there!  LSI was in the exhibit hall with the Lupus & Allied Diseases table.  LSI was able to talk to doctors and other organizations about our mission and how to work together to make lives of those living with lupus better.

LSI also had the opportunity to talk to pharmaceutical sponsors about partnering on activities for 2026.

Lupus Clinical Trial Opportunity

If you have lupus, you may qualify.  
• Do you have active lupus that is not responding to your current medications?
• Are you between the ages of 18-65?
If so, you may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial testing if a new type of cellular therapy is effective and safe in treating active lupus.
