October 2023

A Letter from the President

I hope this email finds you well and safe.

Happy Halloween!  We hope you are able to enjoy this spooky holiday.

The Annual Rush Lupus Clinic & LSI Educational event is coming up on December 2, 2023.  The event will have multiple presentations and registration is highly recommended.

This event is only possible thanks to YOU our supporters.  The success of the Illinois Lupus Walks and the Lupus Charity Runners team in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon make these event possible.  Everyone who walked, volunteers, sponsored, donated and ran in these events is directly responsible for achieving our mission - including our educational events.

Below you'll find wrap-up information on our Lupus Walks and Lupus Charity Runner team.  If you get a chance, look at the photos from these events and you'll find lupus warriors and supporters in every photo!

If you've ever wanted to run a marathon, this is this time to claim your guaranteed spot in the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.  We have a wonderful program, with excellent benefits.  For more information on the program and to claim your spot, contact mary@lupusil.org.

With the holidays right around the corner, we're gearing up for GivingTuesday - a day of giving held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  Participation can include donating or volunteering.  We encourage you to take the opportunity to raise lupus awareness by posting on social media, sending emails with lupus facts to family and friends.

We are still looking for your memories!  As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, we want to hear from you!  Take a moment to share your recollections with us online here or post it on social media using #LSI50!

In 50 years, we've come so far.  Together, we make a difference.

Mary

The 2023 Illinois Lupus Walks Bring Out Big Crowds!

The Illinois Lupus Walks brought out hundreds of supporters and raised thousands of dollars for our mission in Illinois.

DJ Rick Webster got the crowd going at both events.  Everyone enjoyed the team t-shirt contest, the raffle, visiting sponsor and vendor tents and gathering with others from the lupus community.

We heard from LSI's CEO, Charles Brummell, about the LSI's mission and in Chicago Dr. Robert Katz, LSI's Board Chair and Lupus Advocate Dion Langley.

Most importantly, we heard from the Walk Ambassadors.  In the Western Suburbs, we heard from Eddie and Elsa shared their commitment to the Illinois Lupus Walks and how important the Walks were for Jackie, Eddie's sister and Elsa's cousin, who lost her battle with lupus.

In Chicago we heard from Viktoria Baldo, whose challenges with lupus have been documented on her social media accounts and her story has been featured on television and the New York Times.

Stay tuned for information on the 2024 Illinois Lupus Walks.

2023 Lupus Charity Runners Team
On Sunday, October 8, 2023 twenty-five of the 40,000 runners in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon ran for lupus and the LSI.

For our runners, the Marathon was the culmination of months of training, planning and fundraising.  For some, participating was a life-long goal, for others it was their latest running adventure.

LSI is with them every step of the way.  Lupus Charity Runners program provides training to all of our runners through Chicago Endurance Sports.  Training is either in-person or virtual and feedback has always been positive.

We also provide runners the tools to share their stories and journey while reaching their fundraising goals.  You can look at their stories here (scroll down to see the runners pages).

We were honored to have all of them wear our singlet on race day.

Prior to race day, LSI hosted runners at a dinner or a lunch in their honor.  We are always honored to hear their motivation for running and why running for lupus is so important and valuable to them.

Some run in honor of a family member battling lupus. Some have lupus and run to raise awareness.  Some are running in memory of a family member who lost their battle to lupus.  All of them take on the daunting task of running 26.2 miles to raise awareness and funds for the Lupus Society of Illinois.

Thank you to all of our Lupus Charity Runners!  We are honored to have you on the team and in the LSI family!

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Fatigue & Lupus

A major problem for people living with lupus is fatigue – chronic debilitating fatigue that significantly decreases quality of life and increases the risk of work disability.

How does someone manage fatigue?  Finding strategies that work for you and for lupus patients in general is the purpose of the Lupus Intervention Fatigue Trial (LIFT).
