LUPUS RESEARCH UPDATE

Dr. Robert Katz

LUPUS AND ANXIETY & DEPRESSION
By Dr. Robert Katz

The effects of exercise intervention on health-related quality of life in patients with systemic lupus in the journal Healthcare.

In this study, 1,058 articles were reviewed, and nine of them discussed systemic lupus and exercise. Five of them were randomized controlled trials, which is the best form of reliable research. The things that were positive were that exercise intervention compared to usual care might be able to improve the physical functioning and health-related quality of life in patients with lupus.

LUPUS CHARITY RUNNERS

2021 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Team!

Thanks to all of our runners on the 2021 Chicago Marathon team!  We have a great team and a great program and the proof are the runners who join our team year after year!  We received the photos below from some of our runners.  One of our runers, Robin M, shared her thoughts on our team (see below).  If you've ever thought about running a marathon, contact LSI for information on our outstanding program and find out more here!

The marathon itself was amazing. It was crazy hot and humid. By mile 8 I knew there was no chance of me hitting my goal time and I was 100% ok with that. After all, I hadn’t trained for 80° temps and 84% humidity. I felt like I was breathing soup. So I decided I just wanted to finish without hurting myself, making myself sick and I wanted to take in the entire experience. I slowed way down, stopped at every single water and Gatorade station, visited and thanked the volunteers, thanked all the law enforcement officers, high fived every small child, I stopped to aid 3 separate runners with cramping by giving them salt tabs I carry in my running belt, I ran with a blind man, walked with a man who was going to quit with only two miles to go (man, I hope he finished) saw a million dogs, cried a few times over the sheer energy from the 26.2 mile cheer squad…. I literally soaked up every possible second of this race. It’s definitely something I will never ever forget. Thank you much for giving me this once in a lifetime moment.

SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE

Chris, Cathy, Sharon, & instructor Debbie

Glenview Lupus Support Group & YogaSix

The Glenview Lupus Support Group, led by Chris, hosted a special meeting at YogaSix in Glenview.

LSI's Lisa Klaslo helped facilitate this special class for this group.

Chris said: "There were four of us from the group that joined the beginner's class there. Our instructor, Debbie, was awesome! She understood that some of us had limitations on what we could do and she was very accommodating. She even brought a chair for our member Cathy who couldn't get down on the floor."

Thanks to YogaSix, Chris and Lisa and all of the partiicpants who made this event happen!

New Support Group!

LSI is proud to work with dedicated and compassionate volunteers who organize and lead support groups throughout the state.

Fatigue & Lupus

A major problem for people living with lupus is fatigue – chronic debilitating fatigue that significantly decreases quality of life and increases the risk of work disability.

How does someone manage fatigue?  Finding strategies that work for you and for lupus patients in general is the purpose of the Lupus Intervention Fatigue Trial (LIFT).
