January 2024

A Letter from the President

I hope this email finds you well!

2024 is looking like another exciting year for the LSI!  Our Illinois Lupus Walks are scheduled for 2024 and the Walk Committees are just getting started.  If you are interested in taking a more active role in the lupus community and helping to shape the Illinois Lupus Walks, I suggest joining a Walk Committee!

We still have guaranteed spots in the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon!  The spots are going fast so don't wait to finalize your spot.  We have a terrific team.  Members get training - either live or virtual - through Chicago Endurance Sports.  Also, a singlet, fundraising page and more.

The LSI Associate Board is hosting another Bulls Game!  Tickets are on sale now here.  Last year's outing was a great success, we hope you can join us this year.

We have two support groups in the early stages of forming.  You can read about Lavita Williams in this issue of the Butterfly Effect Newsletter.  If you're interested in finding out more about a support group - or starting your own! - contact Lisa@lupusil.org.

Support Groups are an amazing resource - and FUN!  The LEARN Support Group and the Purple Swans went to see The Color Purple together in January!

We love our volunteers!  Lupus Warrior Donna Emery shared a photo of her family working at a health fair last fall.  THANK YOU!  See the picture below.

And don't miss the annual Lupus Love Event coming up on February 16th!

We look forward to working together in 2024.

Together we make a difference.

Mary

MEET LAVITA WILLIAMS, LUPUS WARRIOR AND LSI’S NEWEST SUPPORT GROUP LEADER

Being diagnosed with lupus does have a big change on your family, And your friends. I lost most of my friends because I wasn’t able to do the things that I used to do with them (simply walking in the mall shopping, going out to parties or even lunches & dinner). Friends do not understand that you do not have the energy and that you’re always sick.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Fatigue & Lupus

A major problem for people living with lupus is fatigue – chronic debilitating fatigue that significantly decreases quality of life and increases the risk of work disability.

How does someone manage fatigue?  Finding strategies that work for you and for lupus patients in general is the purpose of the Lupus Intervention Fatigue Trial (LIFT).

Lupus Clinical Trial Opportunity

If you have lupus, you may qualify.
• Do you have active lupus that is not responding to your current medications?
• Are you between the ages of 18-65?
If so, you may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial testing if a new type of cellular therapy is effective and safe in treating active lupus.
