February 2025

A Letter from the President

I hope this email finds you well

There is a lot going on at the LSI.  If you aren't signed up for our Social Media accounts, now's the time.  We're increasing and diversifying our content.  Check it out and be sure to LIKE and SHARE the content to increase lupus awareness.

We have an important educational webinar this evening.  Lupus Warrior LaShon Gurrola presents on Heart Health Awareness and Lupus.  LaShon provides factual information about lupus and cardiovascular disease, while sharing her own experiences.  You can register here.

On February 20th, we hosted the Cutaneous Lupus Educational Webinar  presented by Dr. Paras Vakharia.  Dr. Vakharia is a dermatologist and pharmacist at Northwestern Medicine. He is part of the rheumatology-dermatology team at Northwestern, with a focus on lupus and other autoimmune diseases. Dr. Vakharia in depth presentation included a Q&A session.  If you missed the presentation, you can watch it here

Be sure to purchase tickets for the  LSI Associate Board’s Soccer Match Event. Tickets have a face value of $45 but the AB is selling them for $36. Find out more and purchase your tickets here.

Finally, I want to highlight our Bank of America Chicago Marathon team. We have 45 runners who are taking on the task of running 26.2 miles to raise funds and awareness about lupus.  If you get a chance, take a look at the team page and read some of the stories from our runners. We look forward to cheering them on through race day!

Together, we make a difference.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Fatigue & Lupus

A major problem for people living with lupus is fatigue – chronic debilitating fatigue that significantly decreases quality of life and increases the risk of work disability.

How does someone manage fatigue?  Finding strategies that work for you and for lupus patients in general is the purpose of the Lupus Intervention Fatigue Trial (LIFT).

If you have lupus, you may qualify.
• Do you have active lupus that is not responding to your current medications?
• Are you between the ages of 18-65?
If so, you may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial testing if a new type of cellular therapy is effective and safe in treating active lupus.
