November 2022

A Letter from the President

I hope this email finds you well and safe.

Thanksgiving is less than a week away and that means the holidays have officially arrived.

As we all get excited about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, let's spend a moment on GivingTuesday.  GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.  GivingTuesday is an opportunity for people around the world to stand together in unity—to use their individual power of generosity to remain connected and heal.

We hope you will consider to donating to our GivingTuesday campaign.

In the coming weeks we'll be looking back on our achievements in 2022 and forward to our goals for 2023.  Right now, we'd like to give thanks for today.

Thank you - to everyone who has participated in an educational event, a walk, health fair or other LSI activity.  Thank you - if you've volunteered at an event, the office or a board. Thank you to everyone who has raised awareness about lupus.  And an especially big thank you to anyone who has helped someone living with lupus - especially our support group leaders who are true heroes.

THANK YOU!

Before we move on to 2023, we have one final event this calendar year - the Rush Lupus Clinic & LSI Educational Event on December 3, 2022.  This is a fantastic  event and we hope you are able to participate.  Dr. Jolly, Dr. Nika and their team at Rush always have exceptional presentations and the Rush team is always accessible to answer questions.

Like everything we do as LSI, this event is engaging and full of heart.  We hope you can attend.

LSI was proud to partner with Kathleen and David Arntsen on the Enhancing Lives by Empowering the Lupus Community event last month. What a wonderful event! You can see photos from the event  here and at right.  Our Board Chair Dr. Robert Katz also presented at the event.

We have added 3 webinars to our YouTube channel - you can now view Are You Ready for Something More? presented by Presented by Courtney Mitchell, BSN, MSN, CFNP, Patient Engagement Liaison, GSK; Lupus, Anxiety & Depression presented by Dr. Small and Lupus & Fibromyalgia presented by Dr. Alexandra Small.

To everyone in the lupus community, we hope you have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving!

Together we make a difference.

Mary

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE NEW STUDY TITLED: “ANTI-CD19 CAR T CELL THERAPY FOR REFRACTORY SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS”.

The causes of lupus are complex, but it is known that a type of immune cell called a B-Cell, is thought to play a central role in lupus. For some patients, existing treatments are not able to control their disease, leading to devastating consequences. These patients are said to have “refractory lupus.” In these cases, experimental treatments are sometimes given.

WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE WITH LUPUS KNOW ABOUT LUPUS DIAGNOSIS?

A diagnosis of lupus can be difficult due to the gradual development of symptoms. Suspected cases must be confirmed by a series of blood tests such as anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies and anti-Smith antibodies. Levels of certain complement proteins, which are part of the immune system, are measured and help to track the disease. Low complements tend to suggest the presence of lupus and increased lupus disease activity. Doctors sometimes use the 1997 American College of Rheumatology criteria for the classification of systemic lupus erythematosus to aid in the diagnosis.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Fatigue & Lupus

A major problem for people living with lupus is fatigue – chronic debilitating fatigue that significantly decreases quality of life and increases the risk of work disability.

How does someone manage fatigue?  Finding strategies that work for you and for lupus patients in general is the purpose of the Lupus Intervention Fatigue Trial (LIFT).
