March 2022

A Letter from the President

Welcome!  There's so much to report on! Our first live educational event is happening on April 23, 2022.  the Empowering Lupus Patients Educational Event is focusing on lupus and kidney health.  We hope you can join us for this special event - it will be wonderful to see you!

We have a new column we're launching - "Should People with Lupus..." will answer question in a direct manner.  Stay tuned for more important topics and if you have a question you'd like answered, send it to me at mary@lupusil.org.

We have launched Lupus Walk season.  This year the Southern Suburbs Lupus Walk will include Cruisin' for Lupus - a fun way to participate in the Lupus Walk without getting out of your car!  Stay tuned for more information on this fun event.  It's never too early to register for the Lupus Walks and start your team.

Lupus Walks are a great way to show your support to the lupus community.  It's a great opportunity to educate your community about lupus while raising important funds to continue our mission in Illinois.

And if the Lupus Walk isn't a big enough challenge, there's still time to join Lupus Charity Runners for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon!  We have GUARANTEED SPOTS - but they are going fast.  Contact mary@lupusil.org for more information if you are interested.  We always have a wonderful team of lupus champions.

Finally, i want to bring to your attention that March 30th is Doctor's Day - an annual observance aimed at appreciating physicians who help save our lives.  What an important day for everyone living with lupus and those who care about them.

We are fortunate to have access to expert medical advice to help guide our efforts.  Our Medical Advisory Board physicians are leaders in the field and we are grateful for their support.

And we are grateful for YOUR support as well.

Together we make a difference.

Mary

Introducing a NEW column
Should People with Lupus...

Get the COVID-19 Booster Vaccines?

The COVID-19 vaccines are effective, including a booster dose, in vulnerable lupus patients, including those taking immunosuppressive therapies.

An additional booster dose, or a fourth dose, is reasonable for patients with lupus, especially those on immunocompromising medications.

Lupus & Fibromyalgia
Thursday, November 10, 2022 | 6:30pm

Fibromyalgia is a disorder that can occur alone or secondary to connective tissue disorders such as lupus. Studies suggest that about 25% of people who have lupus also have fibromyalgia.  It is important for people who have lupus to learn about fibromyalgia because symptoms of both conditions can be similar, but the treatments are different.

Fatigue & Lupus

A major problem for people living with lupus is fatigue – chronic debilitating fatigue that significantly decreases quality of life and increases the risk of work disability.

How does someone manage fatigue?  Finding strategies that work for you and for lupus patients in general is the purpose of the Lupus Intervention Fatigue Trial (LIFT).
