January 2020

A Letter from the President

Dear Friend,

Happy New Year!  I hope 2020 is off to a good start for you!  It sure is for Illinois’ lupus community!

Our first educational event of the calendar year is THIS SATURDAY!  The Empowering Lupus Patients Educational event is in it’s 13th year.  The purpose of the event is to give participants the tools to live well with lupus.  . This year’s agenda is terrific:

  • Hair and Skin Care Facts...When Lupus Shows up; Presented by: Dudley Beauty College Education Team
  • Lupus & Hormones; Presented by Dr. Zineb Aouhab, Loyola University Medical Center
  • Lupus & Pain Management: Presented by: Dr. Rita McGuire

For a full agenda and to register click here

This event is possible for two reasons.

  1. Robertha, Support Group Leader for the Trinity United Church of Christ who has worked on all 13 events. And…
  2. The Illinois Lupus Walks.

The Illinois Lupus Walk is a great way to increase lupus awareness in your community.  The Walks are also LSI’s primary fundraiser- enabling us to provide educational events, individual peer support and personal support at no cost to the lupus community.

If you have been to an Illinois Lupus Walk you know how these events honor and celebrate the lupus community.  You don’t have to explain what lupus is to anyone at the lupus walks making it a great way to build your personal lupus network.

We have three Lupus Walks this year – we hope to see you at one. Registration is open now:

We work hard every day to make lives better.  With a staff of 3 and hundreds of volunteers we are able to provide personal support to people who need it.
Together we make a difference.

Fatigue & Lupus

A major problem for people living with lupus is fatigue – chronic debilitating fatigue that significantly decreases quality of life and increases the risk of work disability.

How does someone manage fatigue?  Finding strategies that work for you and for lupus patients in general is the purpose of the Lupus Intervention Fatigue Trial (LIFT).

RUSH Lupus Study

The study is a 24 week randomized, double-blind controlled multicenter study followed by an open label extension treatment for another 24 weeks. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the correction of the omega-3 deficiency may reduce disease activity in SLE patients.
